As some or most of you knew, I joined up with my wife and neighbors for a non-traditional tri-relay.
It was so. much. fun.
Long story, short:
We had a relay of 1/4 mile swim, 1/4 mile paddle board, and a 3/4 mile run.
Since my group decided I was to be the designated swimmer, I swam 6 of the 7 circuits we completed. I also jumped on the last run to end our 2 hours.
The good: swimming that many circuits was exhausting but invigorating. Could I become a Master's triathlete??
The bad: we (fitness businesses) need to continue to reach our audience in a variety of ways so that we can get our great events and services to the people who need them.
We were almost totally bummed that the tri wasn't going to happen, mainly because she only promoted her event through her newsletter.
The ugly: my shoulders were definitely not prepared for 1.5 miles of swimming in 120 minutes.
The Need for Variety
I've been in a rut with my running lately - mostly because my hamstring has been giving me fits since June.
But besides that pain (in the ass), I've also found that training without having a major running goal left me stale.
That and I’ve been running 95% of my runs by myself, which definitely doesn’t help. So joining up with some friends and Carly was a great motivator.
I've written about how I started biking, and that really helped keep things interesting and kept me moving. And then I added in some swims leading up to the tri and that also helped.
Beyond Running: Alternative Training Methods
I know that most of us are training for a running race. And I know that a running race requires us to have the mileage in our legs from miles of training leading up to the race.
But for those of us who are just dabbling in training - in staying fit for life - training our bodies in a variety of ways is really useful at being a well-rounded athlete.
I'm definitely not saying everyone should downshift their run training in favor of cross training, but I definitely am saying if you get the opportunity, yes, you should change shit up.
