Why I'm Pro-Training Log for Life

Maybe it was just a feeling I had, but to me, the Run856 Facebook group was BUZZING with their November mileage.

“I ran this much.”

“I’d like to run this much.”

“So impressed, how do you run so far?”

And on and on.  

Mileage is a language all runners speak.  We are asked how far we ran today. How many miles did you run this week?  What’s your mileage for the month? 

Right?

Mileage is important, of course. The more (safe) miles you can run without breaking down, the better off you’re likely to be on race day.  Recover faster, run more. Run more, run faster.

Pretty simple if you ask me.

I’ve kept a training log ever since I started running back in 1999.  I can tell you exactly how many miles I’ve run since the start of 2011 - 9,753.14 miles.

I believe wholeheartedly in training logs: paper, computer program, excel/sheets… I think training logs are such a valuable tool to help runners stay motivated, track their training and racing, and in my case, enhance the runner/coach relationship.

Here are some more reasons why I am pro-training log:

  • Track my shoe’s mileage

  • Reminder on last month’s mileage

  • Review of previous workouts

  • Details about past race performances

Listen, I could go on and on.  

But you get it.  Training logs come in all styles, be sure you’re using one.

Friday’s Action Plan:

Work on activation/warmup drills prior to running - it’ll keep you loose and limber as you age.
