Summer training and running should be about having fun and trying new things.
It’s a time when race times aren’t true reflections of your fitness.
It’s a time when you go on vacation somewhere with nicer weather, and it’s like you’ve just leveled up.
So yeah, summer is great for logging those miles, but it’s also a great time to experiment.
If you’re looking for more guidance on racing, training structure, or motivation, I’ve got you covered. Sign up for a coaching plan or in-person session today. Let’s make this your best season ever.
Here are a few things I’m going to do that you might find beneficial, too.
Relay race(s)
I’ve already signed up for one, and I no doubt will be filling up my calendar with some more. Relays are SO MUCH FUN, plus there is a lot less stress and pressure knowing you’re in it with other people.
The first one I’m doing is the Rebel Relays. There will be others, like the Ragnar Relay that I’m eyeing up as well.
Cross training (swimming and biking)
I’m really starting to like the non-running workouts I’ve been doing. While I certainly need a lot more time in the saddle, swimming is something that I feel I can continue to see progress with.
Trail running
I love, love, love trails, but without a lot in our area, I really need to get out of town for some. While that’s a small barrier, the idea of trails (and mountains) are calling.
Night running
I’m normally a morning runner, but because we’ll both be upping our mileage, one of us is possibly going to have to run in the evening. While I don’t like a day’s worth of food sloshing around, it’s something “new” to try and get some practice with.
Strength training
I like strength training, but I don’t do it nearly enough. Now that summer is here, I really don’t have any reasons not to. Plus, I know how good strength training is for me, so it’s something I just need to do! One thing that will help me do more is having the gear/equipment that I’ll need right near where I’ll be doing it, so there aren’t any excuses.
