What do success, progress, and healing all have in common?
All three are not linear, which means that there is no one straight path to the proverbial finish line.
Success is rarely a straightforward line; we all know that. It has its ups and downs and its turns as we navigate through a season of life.
Progress, like success, is rarely a straight shot. We have our seasons where everything goes according to plan, and others when every step we take is slippery and dicey.
As we get older in the tooth, one bad move might set us back days, weeks, or months. The goal of many is to just avoid those missteps. For the rest, we have those stretches when it feels like everything goes wrong.
Healing, as with success and progress, is never, ever a straight arrow shot. It’s filled with difficult choices, setbacks, and wrong turns. I would say that dealing with injury or a setback is much like a good Dr. Seuss book. Comically weird; often true, and otherwise frustrating.
As I write this, I’m in the middle of the healing process - 3 months of inconsistent running, where the only thing that’s been consistent has been the pain in my soleus (under the meaty part of your calf muscle, the gastrocnemius). While I’m rounding a corner, I’m not there yet.
Would I love to be healthy and running right now? OF COURSE!
These days, I’ve been focusing on healing. Instead of dwelling on what I did wrong, I’m going to focus on the things I can control: have fun while I can and enjoy the little things. But when that’s done, I’ll get started with progress. Small steps forward and hopefully no huge steps backward.
And then once I’m fully recovered from the injury, it’ll be about charting my progress until I get to “success”.
The backward steps are, unfortunately, part of the journey. Sure, we want to limit them, but they happen. Whether it’s success, progress, or healing, this journey we’re on is certainly not a straight line.
