During our Thursday Dad run, Gil wanted to know what wise words I had for Tim, who's running the Philly Half Marathon this weekend.
While I didn't have any great words for Tim during the run (who has time to think of something witty, smart, and or useful while running in the dark at 6 am?; definitely not me) but here's my attempt at telling Tim - and my other runners - and any runner around the globe - who is getting ready for their upcoming goal race.
1) You are ready.
You've done the work and a lot of good work. More importantly, you've done it without missing a beat.
2) You are fit.
You've set PRs this year already and have only gotten stronger and fitter. That tells me you're ready to chop off even more time.
3) You've stayed healthy.
You've done your due diligence in keeping yourself healthy while running each and every day.
4) Find your pack.
There will be people around you. Use them. Find their slip stream and turn your brain off while you use them to block any and all wind.
That's one of the main reasons I don't like wearing a long sleeve shirt during a race - the unpredictability of how warm I might get is too great.
If it's really, really cold out I would wear tights, but otherwise I will most likely wear running shorts or half tights for the race.
5) Set your pace.
Running a half marathon requires you to pour out the right amount of energy throughout the race. Use too much too early and you'll hit the wall in the closing stages. Don't use it all up and you'll leave too much meat on the bone and you won't be able to do much in the last 1/5 of the race.
6) Celebrate.
Not only after the race, but during it. The work you've put in is worth celebrating no matter what the outcome is.
